Jules Feiffer Pas De Deux With Whale.jpg

Jules Feiffer created this special work of art specifically for Canio’s Moby-Dick Marathon fundraiser. With his signature wit, he illustrates what happens when monomanical leaders fool with nature. Feiffer was the Village Voice cartoonist for many decades, and author of several books. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 as America’s leading editorial cartoonist, and his play The Man in The Ceiling is currently at Bay Street Theatre.

Claus Hoie watercolor, Queequeg, signed “For Canio,” 6 x 7 1/4,” framed 14 x 16.” Retail, $4500. OPENING BID: $3000, bid increments $200. Call 631.725.4926 to bid.

Claus Hoie Queequeg For Canio

Claus Hoie (1911 – 2007) came from a Stavanger, Norway seafaring family and lived in East Hampton for many years. He is particularly well-known for his paintings relating to the sea, including sailing vessels, 19th century captain’s logs, and the story of the great white whale Moby-Dick.  A member of the Hoie Foundation board describes this piece “as a fully developed work, with attention to sky and water tonality, and attention to the relationship of figure to the seascape.  Fully developed Hoie watercolors of this theme are all in museums or institutional collections. There does not appear to be anything comparable, that would be available to the public through usual market channels.”

Bidding for the art in our Silent Auction is open now through Herman Melville’s birthday, August 1.  Please call Canio’s to place your bid.  Thanks!
